tomorrow, 18 August 2010 is the day i bid goodbye to myopia! sayonara spectacles!
i've been wearing spectacles since i was seven, and started wearing contacts when i was 14. thinking about it, it's been a good 8 years already! i always knew that i would do lasik once i was older, and now the time has finally come!
the many benefits of lasik are clear to see (haha pun intended), such as not having to wear contacts anymore, not getting dry eyes, being able to see clearly when you swim, and most importantly, waking up and opening your eyes to a crystal clear world.
i think everyone knows at least someone around them who has had lasik, and i'm sure that you've already heard about how happy they are with it, or how its the best decision they've ever made. i do hope that come tomorrow afternoon, i'll join their ranks. however, in the course of my research i've also come across the not so shiny side of lasik. first and foremost, lasik is an elective surgery. no one absolutely has to have it, but most people do anyway because of the aforementioned benefits. i certainly see what some of the detractors mean. it is a little like playing god, of not being satisfied with what we are given and wanting more. to be honest, i was pretty spooked after i read certain articles. in one, the speaker mentioned that lasik patients' level of satisfaction should not be confused with the objective facts of lasik's long-term effects. which i found really spooky, cuz definitely almost everyone is very happy with doing lasik, but no one really knows for sure what the final implications of the cornea flap are. lasik is after all a relatively new surgery at around 20 years.
but after a long internal struggle, i've still decided to go ahead with it. B chided me quite abit when i was voicing my fears to him. i have a very low risk appetite, or as he loves to say, " kia see". haha. i'm compelled to do as much research as possible before i travel to a new country, buy a new phone etc etc. i even take very long to decide what to eat in a food court because i want to stroll around and see what every stall is selling before i decide. haha. i know there is a certain beauty in being decisive and not looking back, but i'm just not made that way i guess!
i've been researching about post-lasik recovery tonight, but i guess what i should do now is sleep early and pray for a successful operation tomorrow!
wish me luck! (:
